DUFF, JAMES C. - Came to Texas in January, 1834. This is stated in Headright Certificate No. 60 for one league and one labor of land issued to him in 1838 by the Board of Land Commissioners for Austin County. On February 5, 1836 he had received title to one league of land in Austin’s Fifth Colony, situated in what is now Fayette County. This was probably cancelled by the Republic of Texas.

Mr. Duff was a member of Captain Gibson Kuykendall’s Company. He was issued Donation Certificate no. 136, November 21, 1848 for 640 acres of land for having been detailed to guard the baggage at the camp opposite Harrisburg, April 21, 1836. He was living in Austin County, February 24, 1849 when he sold the certificate to Jonathan York of De Witt County for $50.00. He was issued Bounty Certificate No. 134 for 320 acres of land October 21, 1836 for having served in the army from March 1 to June 1, 1836. He enlisted May 18, 1836 in Captain H. R. Wigginton’s Company.
Mr. Duff was living in Fayette County, June 5, 1857 when he sold his headright certificate for a league and labor of land. (Book G, p. 74, Deed Records of Austin County.) At his death he was buried in the Duff Cemetery, one-half of a mile from Praha, Fayette County.
Mr. Duff was married to Melvina___________.
Their children were Maria Caroline, Marion and Abe Duff. (1) Maria Caroline Duff was born May 2, 1836 while her mother was on the “Runaway Scrape”. Mrs. Ola H. Beaubien, 4008 ½ Walker Avenue, Houston, is a descendant. (2) Marion Duff. Mr. Walker Duff of Flatonia is a son.
