CHANCE, JOSEPH BELL - Born in Tennessee, July 4, 1800. He came to Texas in 1831, as is shown in Headright Certificate No. 295 issued to him February 6, 1838 by the Washington County Board of Land Commissioners for one labor of land. He, Captain Chance, was a delegate to the Second Convention of Texas held in San Felipe de Austin in 1833. In 1836 he commanded a company of the Second Regiment of Texas Volunteers. On September 5, 1838 he was issued Donation Certificate No. 532 for 640 acres of land for having been detailed to guard the baggage at the camp opposite Harrisburg, April 21, 1836. He was issued Bounty Certificate No. 1439 for 1280 acres of land January 11, 1838 for having served in the army from February 20, to May 20, 1836.

Captain Chance was married to Nancy Broaden. His home in 1835 was near the town of Hidalgo in Washington County. He died in 1840 in what is now Burleson County. His grave is lost.
Children of Captain and Mrs. Chance were William Alexander, who was never married; Charles Coleman, who married Sarah Rowland, and after her death, Mary A. Thomas; Elijah, who married Fannie Parker; and Mary Ann Chance, who married John M. Wyatt.
Mr. E. L. Chance, Liberty Hill, Texas is a grandson of Captain Joseph B. Chance. He is a son of Charles C. and Mary (Thomas) Chance.
