BOX, STILWELL - Name omitted from the official San Jacinto rolls as printed in 1836. He was born in Tennessee. In Headright Certificate N0. 55 issued to him for one labor of land, January 20, 1838 by the Houston County Board it is stated that he came to Texas in November, 1834. In Service Record No. 6543, dated June 19, 1836, it is certified that he served in Captain Hayden Arnold’s Company from March 19 to June 19, 1836. He was issued Donation Certificate No. 1135 for 640 acres of land February 17, 1841 for having participated in the battle of San Jacinto. Yet, in the Memorials and Petition, Archives, State Library, Austin, is found the following petition from Reverend Box:

“To the Hon Senate and House of Representatives, your Petitioner would most respectfully show that he was one of Capt. Hayden Arnold’s Company at the time of the battle of Sagisinto was fought, but was (against my will) detached to garde the baggage Waggons, on that day, and my Capt. Haden Arnold, having neglected to make a full return my clain to bounty land cannot be properly audited. I am therefore reduced to the necessity of asking you Hon Boddy such releif as you in your wisdom may desire propper and Right, and your Petitioner will ever pray etc.”
Rev. Box was issued Bounty Certificate No. 2159 for 320 acres of land January 29, 1838 for having served in the army from March 19 to June 19, 1836.
The Daily Houston Telegraph of April 22, 1870 quote the following from the
Crockett (Houston County) Journal
“We are pained to record the death of Rev. Stilwell Box, for over a quarter of a century a resident of this county, who died at his residence three miles from Crockett, Monday night last, after a severe illness of about two weeks. Mr. Box was a minister of the M. E. Church, a worthy citizen, and his death is much regretted. “
