BELCHER, ISHAM G. – The compiler is responsible for Mr. Belcher’s name being omitted from the bronze plaque in the San Jacinto memorial monument on which are inscribed the names of the Texans who were detailed to guard the baggage at the camp opposite Harrisburg, April 21, 1836. He now (March 28, 1941) believes that the name should be added to the list.

Mr. Belcher’s name is not on the San Jacinto rolls printed in 1836 but it appears on page 36 of the San Jacinto rolls in the General Land Office as J. Belcher, a member of Captain William W. Hill’s Company.

The compiler believes that Mr. Belcher was left sick at the home of Charles Donohoo on April 21, 1836, or at the camp opposite Harrisburg, but he has no proof that such was the case.

Mr. Belcher served in Captain George W. Barrett’s company in Indian campaigns from July 20 to August 28, 1835. He was issued Bounty Certificate No. 3464 for 320 acres of land May 19, 1838 for having served in the army from October 8 to December 22, 1835. He was issued Donation Certificate No. 184 for 640 acres May 22, 1838 for having participated in the Storming and Capture of Bexar, December 5 to 10, 1835. He served in Captain William W. Hill’s company from March 1 to May 30, 1836 and for their service he was issued Bounty Certificate No. 1922 for 320 acres of land, January 18, 1838. He was a trustee of Union Academy, Washington, Texas in 1840.

Mr. Belcher was married to Mrs. B. Clark in Washington County, November 16, 1838. Mr. Belcher was living in Washington County as late as 1850.
