WHITAKER, MADISON G.-- Born in Lincoln County, Tennessee, April 4, 1811. He came to Texas in February 1835, as is shown in Headright Certificate No. 63 issued to him February 1, 1838, for one-third of a league of land by the Nacogdoches County Board. On September 14, 1835, he was elected a member of the Committee of Safety and Vigilance for Nacogdoches Municipality. On the same day he and Soloman R. Peck were chosen to hold the election beginning ten o'clock on the morning of October 1, 1835, to select delegates to the Consultation. In October, 1835, he enlisted in the army as a Sergeant of the company commanded by Captain Thomas J. Rusk and marched with it to Bexar. On November 28, 1835, he was elected a second lieutenant by the General Council of the Provisional Government.

Mr. Whitaker was a member of Captain Hayden Arnold's "Nacogdoches Company" at San Jacinto and on January 25, 1839, he was issued Donation Certificate No. 780 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. On January 15, 1841, he received Bounty Certificate No. 9828 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from March 6 to June 6, 1836. In 1839 Captain Whitaker served under General K. H. Douglas in the campaign against the Cherokee Indians. In 1853 Fifth Legislature he represented the Fourth District in the Senate of the Texas Legislature, The Marriage Records of Nacogdoches County show that Captain Whitaker and Henrietta M. Fitts were married at Nacogdoches August 25, 1841. Mrs. W. born August 3, 1823. Mrs. Whitaker died May 12, 1862. Captain Whitaker died January 23, 1893, while a member of the Texas Veterans Association and was buried in the old North Church Cemetery five miles north of Nacogdoches beside the remains of his wife, in a marked grave.
Children of Captain and Mrs. Whitaker were (1) Edward, (2) Ariadne, (3) Anna, (4) Olevia, (5) Madison G., Jr., (6) Unknown girl, (7) Richard D., and (8) John, who died before his father and was survived by a son, Clinton.
