TAYLOR, WILLIAM S. -- The compiler has been unable to learn when and where Mr. Taylor was born. He came to Texas in 1832, as is stated in Headright Certificate No. 183 issued to him for one-third of a league of land February 2, 1838 by the Montgomery County Board of Land Commissioners. In Comptroller's Military Service Record No. 1441 it is stated that he first joined the army of Texas October 17, 1835 in Captain John Bradley's Company and was discharged December 23, 1835. He reenlisted March 2, 1836 and served in the commands of Captain William Ware, William H. Smith and Lieutenant Job Collard. In the service record it is stated that he served under Colonel Sidney Sherman in the skirmish on April 20th and in Captain William H. Smith's Cavalry Company on the 21st, and was issued Donation Certificate No. 353 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle of San Jacinto.

At a convention held on the San Jacinto battle field April 21, 1860, General Sam Houston was endorsed for President of the United States as "the peoples candidate." Isaac L. Hill, a San Jacinto veteran, was elected president of the convention and among the vice presidents chosen were the following who had served under General Houston at San Jacinto: William S. Taylor, Daniel Paschall, Ellis Benson, Andrew Montgomery, William Dunbar and David H. Love.
A lengthy account of the San Jacinto campaign written by Mr. Taylor was published in the Texas Almanac of 1868. The records kept by Montgomery (Masonic) Lodge No. 25, of which be was a member, show that Mr. Taylor died in the town of Montgomery, Montgomery County, February 2, 1869 and was buried the following day with Masonic honors. The State of Texas erected a monument at his grave in 1936.
Mr. Taylor was married to Agnes Elizabeth Garrette. Mrs. Taylor died in 1879 and is buried in Mount Pleasant in Montgomery County.
Children of Mr. and Mrs. Taylor were Alexander, Thomas, Volney, who married to Virginia Fields; Charles, Sam Houston, William Washington, Sallie; a daughter who married Joseph Fields; Mollie, Agnes, who married F. M. Rabau; and Dollie Taylor, who married Sim Hendrix.
