SWIFT, HUGH MONTGOMERY -- Born in Hanover County near Richmond, Virginia, October 11, 1809, fourth of eleven children of Charles Swift and Jane Banks Thompson Swift. Charles Swift was born March 18, 1780 and died June 16, 1852. Mrs. Swift was born March 31, 1783, and died July 3, 1837. Their children in order of birth were Alonzo, Cleavers Warren, Jane Ann, Hugh Montgomery, Richard Mercer, Juliet Elizabeth, Andrew Murry, Charles Lawrence Bainbridge, Francis Marion and Frances Bertha Swift.

Hugh Montgomery Swift came to Texas in January, 1836. He took the oath of allegiance to Texas at Nacogdoches, January 14, 1836. He was issued Bounty Certificate No. 1079 for 960 acres of land for having served in the army from February 1 to November 5, 1836. He was a member of Captain Isaac N. Moreland's Company at San Jacinto and on May 11, 1841 Donation Certificate No. 1147 for 640 acres of land was issued in his name, due him for having participated in the battle of San Jacinto. On June 24, 1836 he was Commissioned Adjutant on the staff of the First Regiment of Artillery, commanded by Colonel James C. Neill.
Mr. Swift was issued a Headright Certificate for one-third of a league of land June 7, 1838 by the Harrisburg County Board of Land Commissioners and in the Certificate it is stated that he came to Texas in January, 1836. The land was surveyed in what is now Guadalupe County. He died June 15, 1838 and Arthur Swift was appointed administrator of his estate. He is buried in the Vaughan Cemetery in West Seguin, Guadalupe County. He was never married. He was a cousin of Arthur Swift.
Richard Mercer Swift, brother of Hugh M. Swift, was born in Virginia, June 22, 1811. He was twice married. His first wife died in Henry County, Tennessee in 1842, leaving four children. In 1855 Mr. Swift and his children came to Texas and settled near Seguin. In 1872 he was married to Lucy Ann Hutchinson.
Mr. Swift died at San Marcos, May 7, 1893. His children were Merton Swift, who lives at San Marcos; Daisy, who married B. M. Dailey and lives at San Marcos, and Howard Swift who lives in Uvalde, Texas.
The following information was sent to the compiler February 7, 1938 by Mr. Merton Swift, San Marcos, Texas:
"I visited a niece of Mr. Swift in Dresden, Tenn. last June and she told me that "Montgomery Swift" was a Mississippi River pilot like Mark Twain and that he was a gambler. His parents and 6 brothers and 3 sisters moved from Hanover County, Virginia to Henry County, Tenn. in 1835. The family had lived on a farm near Beaverdam, Va. for over 100 years."
