SWEENY, THOMAS J. -- Name omitted from the official San Jacinto Rolls printed in 1836. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1812, a son of John and Ann Sweeny. He came to Texas in 1833 with his father's family and settled in what is now Brazoria County.

Thomas J. Sweeny was a member of Captain William H. Patton's Columbia Company at San Jacinto and on May 27, 1841 he was issued Donation Certificate No. 1151 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. On the same date he received Bounty Certificate No. 9809 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from March 5 to June 5, 1836. On January 25, 1838 he was issued Headright Certificate No. 167 for one-third of a league of land by the Brazoria County Board. In this it is merely stated that he came to Texas prior to May 2, 1835.
Mr. Sweeny was married to Frances Haynie. Mr. Sweeny died in La Grange, Texas in 1869 and was buried in the Sweeny family cemetery in Sweeny, Brazoria County. His grave is unmarked. Mrs. Sweeny was born in Chappel Hill, Texas, and died in Angleton. She is buried in an unmarked grave in West Columbia.
Children of Mr. and Mrs. Sweeny, (who spelled their names "Sweeney") were Bettie, who married Dr. r. G. Turner; Edward, who married Mary Nash; Kate, who married Charles Bennett; John, who married Vallie Carker; Beauma, who married Frank Erskine and George Sweeney, who married Laura Black.
Some of the surviving grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Sweeny are V. Beverly Turner, Houston; T. C. Sweeney, Houston; Bryce G. Sweeney, Angleton; R. P. Sweeney, Angleton; C. B. Sweeney, Angleton; Mrs. Kate Sweeney Steward, Angleton; and Mrs. Mabel Sweeney Scoggins, Houston.
No. 529, 6th Feb 1837. This is to certify that Thos. J. Sweeny has served in the Volunteers Army of Texas in my Company from the 5th March to the date below. That he was in the memorable Battle of San Jacinto of 21st April and then as well as at all other times discharged his duty with faith to Texas and honour(sic) to himself and is this day honourably (sic) discharged.
