SUTHERLAND, GEORGE -- Born in Georgia in 1787. He came to Texas in 1830, as is stated in Headright Certificate No. 100 issued to him February 20, 1838 for one labor of land by the Jackson County Board. He was one of the delegates from the District of La Baca to the First Convention of Texas which convened at San Felipe de Austin October 1, 1832, and was a delegate to the Second Convention held at San Felipe in 1833.

Captain Sutherland commanded a company at the Storming and Capture of Bexar, December 5 to 10, 1835. At San Jacinto he was a member of Captain Moseley Baker's Company. In the skirmish on the 20th he had a horse shot from under him. On May 24, 1838 he was issued Donation Certificate No. 39 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. He received Bounty Certificate No. 3092 for 640 acres of land April 13, 1838 for having served in the army from April 1 to October 2, 1836.
Captain Sutherland was a member of the House of Representatives, from Jackson County, in the Second and Ninth Congresses of the Republic. He commanded a volunteer company from June 26 to September 26, 1836. He participated in the Vasquez campaign in 1842 and later that year, with the rank of Major, participated in the Woll campaign.
Major Sutherland was married October 10, 1815 to Frances Menefee, daughter of John and Frances Menefee.
Major Sutherland died in Jackson County April 22, 1855. The State of Texas caused a monument to be erected at his grave in 1936. Mrs. Sutherland was born in Virginia, September 19, 1789 and died at Texana, Jackson County, Texas, March 15, 1874.
Children of Major and Mrs. Sutherland were (l) John, who died while in school in Alabama; (2) William Depriest; (3) Thomas S.; (4) George Washington, who died young; (5) Frances Agnes; (6) Elizabeth Martha; and (7) Georgia Ann Sutherland.
(2)William Depriest Sutherland fell at the Alamo, March 6, 1836.
(3) T. S. Sutherland was the father of twelve children: Tabithia Martha White; Frances Menefee Wells; Elizabeth Martha Wells; George, who died in infancy; John Wiley; Mary Hodges Crockett; Thomas Shelton; Florence Gayle; William Depriest; Robert Lee; and Lillian Bell Sutherland, who married E. L. Farris and now resides in Edna, Texas.
(5)Frances Agnes Sutherland married Alexander T. Gayle, their children were George Sutherland; Martha S., who died in infancy; Ellen; Georgia Ann, who married J. D. Rogers; Martha, who also died; Alexander T., who died at early age; Virginia, who married S. M. Lesesue; Alexander T., who died at the age of sixteen; Mary E. who died at the age of three; and Bartlett B. Gayle, who in 1907 was living in Port Lavaca.
(6)Elizabeth Martha Sutherland was married to a Mr. Gayle.
