STUMP, JOHN S. -- On a copy of Captain William W. Hill's muster roll in the Archives of the Texas State Library, Mr. Stump is shown as having been born in Harrison, Harrison County, Virginia in 1800.

Mr. Stump came to Texas in June, 1835, as is revealed in Headright Certificate No. 38 issued to him February 8, 1838 by the Gonzales County Board for one-third of a league of land. He was enlisted by Captain Joseph P. Lynch, and was described as being five feet nine and one-half inches in height; was of dark complexion; had black hair and hazel eyes. By occupation he was a house joiner.
Mr. Stump was issued Bounty Certificate No. 2100 for 320 acres of land, January 25, 1838 for having served in the army from March 1 to May 30, 1836. He was a member of Captain William W. Hill's Company at San Jacinto and on July 29, 1839 was issued Donation Certificate No. 929 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle.
Mr. Stump was a member of the Santa Fe expedition in 1841. His home in 1848 was in Gonzales County but he later moved to Lampasas County.
An act of the State Legislature, approved January 28, 1860, granted Mr. Stump a pension of $200.00 per year for life. Mr. Stump was at that time living in Lampasas County.
