STEEL, MAXWELL -- In the Headright Certificate issued to his heirs for one third of a league of land by Colorado County Board November 1, 1838 it is stated that Mr. Steele arrived in Texas prior to May 2, 1835. He was a member of Captain William J. E. Heard's Company of "Citizen Soldiers" at San Jacinto.

Mr. Steele died in Colorado County prior to July 2, 1837, at which time Leander Beason was appointed administrator of his estate. (Book A, page 416 Probate Minutes of Colorado County.) His heirs received Bounty Certificate No. 9570 for 320 acres of land, September 2, 1840 for his services in the army from February 25 to May 25, 1836. They received a Donation Certificate No. 1064 at the same time for 640 acres of land due Mr. Steele for having participated in the battle of San Jacinto.
