SMITH, LEANDER -- Name omitted from the official San Jacinto rolls as printed in 1836. In Headright Certificate No. 176 issued to his heirs, February 6, 1838 for a league and labor of land by the Nacogdoches County Board for a league and labor of land it is stated that he arrived in Texas in January, 1836. He was a son of William D. Smith.

Major Smith recruited men for the army of Texas, many of whom served in Captain A. H. Wyly's Company at San Jacinto. He helped to transport the cannon "Twin Sisters" from Harrisburg to the main army. His heirs were issued Donation Certificate No. 411 for 640 acres of land, July 3, 1838 due him for having participated in the battle of San Jacinto. The certificate was erroneously issued to "Lysander Smith," as is explained in his Donation filed in the General Land Office. It has not been ascertained the name of the company in which he served. His heirs were on November 27, 1837 issued Bounty Certificate No. 559 for 1280 acres of land for having served in the army from March 13 to September 18, 1836. He died in Nacogdoches September 18, 1836 while still in the army, survived by his father, his widow, Mrs. Ann Smith, and at least one son, James L. Smith.
Mrs. Leander Smith was married prior to November 2, 1848 to John S. Thorn. Mrs. Thorn died in Nacogdoches May 30, 1855.
On page 65 of the Land Office army rolls the following names are listed under the caption: "Return of men raised for 3 months by Major L. Smith, April 5, 1836."
