SMITH, JOHN -- Born in Northfield, New Hampshire in 1810. He arrived at Velasco, January 28, 1836 on the schooner Pennsylvania, having been recruited in New Orleans by Captain Amasa Turner for the army of Texas. He was issued a Bounty Certificate No. 2282 for 1280 acres of land February 13, 1837. This he sold to Joseph E. Plummer. He was a member of Captain Turner's Company at San Jacinto but did not apply for the donation land due him for having participated in the battle.

At the promotion of Captain Turner to Lieutenant Colonel the men of his company were transferred to Company A, First Regiment of Regular Infantry. On page 170 of the muster rolls in the General Land Office Mr. Smith is shown as having been promoted Captain, August 29, 1836, and he is shown as being in command of Company A, at muster on Galveston Island December 31, 1836. On page 180 of the rolls he is shown as Captain of the company at muster on Galveston Island, February 28, 1837.
Comptroller's Military Service Record No. 915 reads as follows:
"Sergeant of Capt. A. Turner's Company B, 1st Regiment Regular Infantry, Texas Army; enlisted February 13, 1836, to serve for and during the war; discharged June 21, 1836 (by reason of promotion). Said Sergeant John Smith was born in Northfield, New Hampshire. 26 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high. Light complexion, light blue eyes, dark brown hair, and by profession when enlisted a mariner." It was signed by Henry Millard, Lt. Col. commanding the 1st Reg. of Texas Infantry.
Mr. Smith was commissioned first lieutenant and adjutant on the staff of Lieutenant Colonel Millard June 21, 1836; promoted to Captain of Co. "A", 1st Reg. of Inf. August 29,1836, stationed on Galveston Island under the immediate command of Major Isaac N. Moreland.
