SELF, GEORGE -- Came to Texas in 1835, as is shown in the Headright Certificate No. 37, for one-third league of land issued to him January 19, 1838, by the Bastrop County Board of Land Commissioners. He was living in Bastrop County December 8, 1845, when he sold the certificate to W. H. Hunt for $150.00. In Comptroller's Military Service Record No. 702 it is certified that Mr. Self enlisted February 28, 1836, in Captain Jesse Billingsley's company of Mina Volunteers: was discharged June 1, 1836 and enlisted in Captain John G. McGehee's company of Mounted Riflemen November 20, 1836. On May 21, 1838 he was issued Donation Certificate No. 129 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the Battle of San Jacinto. Bounty Certificate No. 3709 for 640 acres of land was issued to him June 6, 1838 for his services from March 1 to November 20, 1838.

The Probate Minutes of Travis County, Book B, p. 410 show that Mr. Self died in March, 1856. James M. Swisher was appointed administrator of his estate August 25, 1856.
A small headstone, about ten inches wide and ten inches high, stood at Mr. Self's grave with no inscription on except the name "Geo. Self". The cemetery in which he is buried is known as the Manor cemetery. It is near the former town of Webberville, Travis County. The State of Texas had a monument erected at his grave in 1936.
