PHILLIPS, SAMUEL--Emigrated to Texas in 1835. He was issued a certificate of Character by Radford Berry, Alcalde of Nacogdoches Municipality, October 2, 1835. He was issued Bounty Certificate No. 894 for 320 acres of land May 5, 1838, for having served in the army from March 1 to June 1, 1836. This he assigned to R.W. Tyns. He was a member of Captain Hayden Arnold's Nacogdoches Company at San Jacinto but did not apply for the land he was entitled to receive for having participated in the battle. On December 3l, 1839 he received Headright Certificate No. 188 for one-third of a league of land from the Houston County Board. On December 26, 1835 at Nacogdoches he had sold his rights to the certificate to W.S. McDonald. In the certificate it is states that Mr. Phillips came to Texas prior to March 2, 1836.
