Veteran Bio

Mr. McCormick came to Texas in 1829 and although he secured land from the Mexican Government he settled on a farm belonging to his uncle, David McCormick, on the west side of the Barnard River, about four miles from the present town of West Columbia. There he lived the remainder of his life.

In Service Record No. 857 it is stated that Mr. McCormick served in the army from March 5 to June 5, 1836 when he was discharged at La Bahia. He re-enlisted July 4, in Captain Byrd Lockhart's Company and was discharged August 16, 1836 at Coleto. He was a member of Captain William H. Patton's COLUMBIA VOLUNTEERS at San Jacinto and on May 15, 1838 was issued Donation Certificate No. 90 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle.

Mr. McCormick was married to Agnes Louisa McKenzie, January 3, 1852. Miss McKenzie was a sister of Mrs. Josiah Hughes Bell. Mr. McCormick died January 21, 1865. His widow, born in Christian County, Kentucky, August 31, 1807, died September 15, 1875. Mr. and Mrs. McCormick are buried in marked graves in the cemetery at West Columbia, Brazoria County, Texas.

Children of Mr. and Mrs. McCormick were: (1) Andrew Phelps, (2) Sarah Elizabeth, (3) A.S. Lathrop, and (4) Katherine Melvina McCormick who died in infancy.

(1) Andrew Phelps McCormick was twice married. He was married first to Mary Lulu Bell, daughter of Josiah H. Bell.

Mrs. E.S. Cole of Champaign , IL, on April 26, 1956 wrote the following: Joseph Manson McCormick married Agnes Louise McKenzie Jan. 1, 1832. (you have it 1852). And Andrew Phelps McCormick married first, Mary Jane Copes, September 8, 1859, had 6 children. Second wife was Louisa Hannah Bell on March 3, 1871, had 11 children.
