LAWRENCE, JOSEPH -- Born in Bencombie County, North Carolina, June 15, 1800. In the Headright Certificate issued to him June 1, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Liberty County Board it is stated that he came to Texas in 1824. He was issued Bounty Certificate No. 387 for 320 acres of land, December 28, 1837 for having served in the army from March 1, to May 28, 1836. His name appears on page 15 of the rolls printed in 1836 as a member of Captain William W. Hill's Company and likewise on page 35 of the Land Office San Jacinto rolls he is listed as a member of Captain Hill's Company. On January 16, 1840 he was issued Donation Certificate No. 999 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the Battle of San Jacinto.

Mr. Lawrence was married to Mary Elenor McGary in Washington County, March 22, 1839. Mrs. Lawrence was born March 4, 1821 and died July 6, 1864. Mr. Lawrence died October 9, 1897, while a member of the Texas Veterans Association. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence are buried in the Andrews Chapel Cemetery near Hackberry, Lavaca County, Texas, three miles east of the main highway between Hallettsville and Schulenburg.
Their children were: William L. who married Henrietta Coffee; Cameron, who married Lizzie Williams; Bettie who married Soloman G. McCown; Margaret who married Wallace Alexander Chrisman; Mary married Henry Smith; Ellen married Jim Jameson; Susan who married Elijah Sewell; Martha married J.J. Brown; Joseph never married; and Andrew Jackson married Belle Morrow.
Surviving grandchildren in 1938 were: Mrs. Jep Griffith of San Antonio; Mrs. Lula Lawrence Simpson of Hackberry; Mrs. Willie Lawrence English of Hackberry; John Lawrence of San Antonio; Mrs. Lizzie Lawrence of San Antonio; Mrs. Mary McCown Sewell of Vernon; Dr. James Rane McCown of Briggs, Alexander Casseday McCown of San Antonio; Mrs. Alfred Rosenthal of Houston; Mrs. Walter Remschel of Dickerson; Mrs. H.B. Fortune of Dallas; William Clark Chrisman Dallas; Mrs. Lizzie Smith Overton of Floresville; Monroe Smith of Floresville; Mrs. Ernest Brown of Lubbock; Arthur Brown of Keller; Cloyd Brown of Dallas; Mrs. Ora Brown Cribbs of Saginaw; Mrs. C.A. Bearden of Tyler; Mrs. R.B. Salter of Houston; Henry Auvin Lawrence of Fort Worth; Mrs. W.C. Butler of Mineral Wells; and Mrs. J. Mark Brown of Conroe, Texas.
