KARNER, JOHN -- Born in Bavaria near Strasbourg on the Rhine, July 25, 1816. In the Headright Certificate issued to him February 26, 1838 by the Harrisburg County Board, for one-third of a league of land it is stated that he came to Texas in 1836. In Service Record No. 4027 it is certified that Mr. Karner was employed as a teamster by Colonel Alamanzon Houston, quartermaster-general, prior to February 17, 1836 and until March 15 when he enlisted in Captain Henry Teal's Company of regulars to serve for the duration of the war. Upon the reorganization of the army Mr. Karner served in Captain Jacob Snively's Company and other organizations until laboring under a protracted indisposition, as well as for his long and faithful services he was discharged September 28, 1837. He received Donation Certificate No. 531 dated September 5, 1838, for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle of San Jacinto. He was issued Bounty Certificate No. 2694 for 1280 acres of land, March 25, 1838 for having served in the army from March 15, 1836 to September 8, 1837.

Mr. Karner was married to Mary Elizabeth Love at Tehuacana, Texas. Mrs. Karner, born in Madison County, Tennessee, May 21, 1833, died April 1, 1886. Mr. Karner died August 18, 1901. The two are buried in marked graves in the cemetery at Mexia, Limestone County, Texas.
Children of Mr. and Mrs. Karner were Mary Elizabeth, John R., Louetta, Annie, Joseph, James, Frances and Philpott Karner.
Mary Elizabeth Karner died in childhood.
John R. Karner was never married.
Louetta Karner was married to J. B. Parker. Their children were Betty, Frances, Lois, John and Gladys Parker.
Annie Karner died in childhood.
Joseph Karner was married to Allie Baldwin. Their child was John Karner.
James Karner was married and had one child, James Karner.
Frances Karner was married to W. S. Beeson. Their children were William, Emmie, Mary, Margaret, Frances, Karner, Louise, Philpott, Jessica and Betty Beeson.
Philpott Karner, youngest child of John Karner, was married to Bassie Seely. Their children were Annie Lou, Philpott, Elizabeth and Jim Seely Karner.
