HYLAND, JOSEPH -- Born in New York City in February, 1804. He lived for a time in New Jersey and then moved to New Orleans. In applying for land in Austin's Colonies he stated that he had arrived in Texas in 1831. In 1838 he received a Headright Certificate for one-third of a league of land from the Colorado County Board. He was a member of Captain William J. E. Heard's Company of "Citizen Soldiers" at San Jacinto and on May 1, 1838, was issued Donation Certificate No. 13 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. In Service Record No. 7480 it is certified that he served in the army from February 29 to June l 1836, when he was discharged at Victoria. He reenlisted in the army July 23, and served until October 23, 1836, for which service he was issued Bounty Certificate No. 3382 on May 15, 1838.

Mr. Hyland moved to Williamson County in 1848. He was first married to a Miss Berry. After her death he was married to Sarah Elizabeth Thompson. To this union were born several children, among them being W. T. Hyland, born March 9, 1851, and died January 20, 1897; J. T. Hyland, born May 16, 1856; Robert R. Hyland, and a daughter who married John C. McBride.
Mr. Hyland died January 19, 1898, while a member of the Texas Veterans Association. His grave in Bagdad Cemetery, one mile east of Leander, Williamson County, is marked.
