GROSS, JACOB -- Born at Manticello, Wayne County, Kentucky, in 1809. In the Headright Certificate issued to him February 3,1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Milam County Board it is stated that he arrived in Texas August 2, 1834. He received Bounty Certificate No. 704 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from March 1 to May 30, 1836. This he sold to Nancy Roberts in Milam County, March 3, 1838. He was a member of Captain William W. Hill's Company at San Jacinto and on May 22, 1838 he was issued Donation Certificate No. 183 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle.

On an original roll of Captain Hill's Company at muster April 11, 1836, the age and place of birth of Mr. Gross is given as well as the following information about him. He was 5 feet, 10 inches in height, of fair complexion, with blue eyes and light hair. He was enlisted at Asa Mitchell's by Captain Joseph P. Lynch.
In Service Record No. 3139 dated at Headquarters, Nashville (Milam County) July 3, 1837, it is certified that Mr. Gross served in Company "A", Captain Thomas H. Barron, in a battalion of rangers of which Major William H. Smith was the commander, from October 3, 1836 to July 3, 1837. For this service he received Bounty Certificate No. 1962 for 1280 acres of land.
Mr. Gross was living in Milam County April 28, 1848 when he deeded a part of his donation land to Francis L. Duffan with the agreement that Mr. Duffan would survey the whole tract. The land was surveyed in Bosque County.
