George Green, the subject of this sketch, always claimed that he swam to Texas. The boat that he sailed in was totally wrecked by a storm in the Gulf of Mexico and he was forced to swim a mile to reach Velasco. In the Headright Certificate issued to him February 4, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Milam County Board he certifies that he arrived in Texas in May 4, 1835. On May 8, 1838 he received Bounty Certificate No. 3228 for 640 acres of land for his services in the army from March 20 to October 3, 1836. He was a member of Captain Jesse Billingsley's Company at San Jacinto and on November 19, 1840, was issued Donation Certificate No. 1085 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. He was dismissed from Captain Billingsley's Company June 20th, and then enlisted in Captain William W. Hill's Company of Rangers. The Veterans Papers at the University of Texas contain an affidavit by Mr. Green in which he states that in the summer of 1836 he served three months in Captain Hill's Company. He also stated that he served under Captain William M. Eastland in the campaign against Indians in 1837 under Colonel Edwin Morehouse in 1841. Shortly after the Battle of San Jacinto Mr. Green settled at Nashville, Milam County, living for a number of years in the home of John W. Porter, surveyor for Robertson's Colony. He became deputy surveyor, first under James Howlet and then under George B. Erath, a comrade of San Jacinto. Erath and Green surveyed the original Milam Land District and most of the land in the district. They laid out the towns of Waco and Cameron. While on a surveying trip, they stopped for dinner one day and found that the sun was exactly on the meridian. They named the place Meridian and it later became the county seat of Bosque County.

In 1840 Mr. Green was married and moved to Chance's Prairie, then in Milam County but now in Burleson County. In 1847 he moved to Cameron. He was twice married, the first time in 1840 to Martha Chance, daughter of James and Sarah Ann Harrell Chance, she was born November 11, 1822 near Raymond, Hines County, Mississippi, and died May 18, 1859 at Cameron, Texas.

Children of this marriage were Louisa, who married William Bartlett Streetman; Ben Milam, who was killed at Gettysburg; Robert Baylor, who married Idella Edwards; Charles, who married Sallie Furguson; Eudocia, who married John Louis Smith; James Buchanan, who married Adaline Posey, and Eunice Green, who died young.

Mr. Green was married April 1, 1861 to Nancy Hasseltine Anderson, daughter of Rev. Thomas Maddison and Mary Cunningham Anderson, she was born in Talladega, Alabama, June 9, 1840 and died at Cameron, Texas December 23, 1918. Mr. Green died April 19, 1885 and he and his wives are buried in marked graves in Oakhill Cemetery, Cameron, Milam County, Texas. Mr. Green was a member of the Texas Veterans Association, a Mason and belonged to the Methodist Church.

Children of Mr. Green and Nancy Hasseltine Anderson Green were: (1) Williametta, m. Marshall Monroe Kemp, lived in Waco; (2) Mary Elizabeth, m. Simeon Maxwell Burns, lived in Cameron; (3) Alice, m. George H. McGehee, lived in Cameron; (4) Laura, died in childhood; (5) Henry Clay, a twin of Laura, m. Stella Batte; (6) John Anderson Green, m. Grace Johnson.
