GRAY, JAMES -- Born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, in 1808. He to Texas in 1835, as is shown in the Headright Certificate for one-third of a league of land issued to him February 1, 1838, by the Washington County Board. He was a member of Captain William W. Hill's Company and on March 25, 1854, was issued Donation Certificate No. 565 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the Battle of San Jacinto.

On an original roll of Captain Hill's Company at muster April 11, 1836, a photostatic copy of which is in the archives at the State Library, the following information concerning Mr. Gray is given: "He was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, in 1808. He was five feet, nine inches in height and of dark complexion. He was enlisted at Washington March 6, 1836, by Gray.
Mr. Gray was issued Bounty Certificate No. 2167 for 320 acres of land January 29, 1838, for having served in the army from March 1 to May 30, 1836. He was living in Washington County, November 11, 1840, when he sold the Bounty Certificate to James T. Jenkins for $25.00.
