GILL, JOHN PORTER -- Born in Alabama, August 9, 1801. He arrived in Texas in 1831 and on May 13th of that year received title to a league of land in Austin's Second Colony, a part of which was surveyed in what is now Washington County and the remaining part in Fayette County. In Headright Certificate No. 370 for one-twelfth of a league of land issued to him May 17, 1838 by the Brazoria County Board of Land Commissioners it is stated that he came to Texas prior to May 2, 1835.

On page 23 of the army rolls in the General Land Office Mr. Gilbert is listed as First Lieutenant of Captain John York's Company before Bexar in 1835. On January 11, 1862 he was issued Donation Certificate No. 13/113 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the "Storming and Capture of Bexar," December 5 to 10, 1835. On May 27, 1839 he received Bounty Certificate No. 9183 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from October 8 to December 5, 1835. He was first lieutenant in Captain Thomas H. McIntire's Company at San Jacinto, but having received one Donation Certificate, he was not entitled to receive another. Apparently he did not apply for the bounty land due him for having served in the army immediately prior to and after the battle. On February 13, 1838 he was issued Bounty Certificate No. 2377 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from June 25 to September 26, 1836.
Mr. Gill was sheriff of Brazoria County in 1848. He moved to Fort Bend County and died there on April 19, 1869. He was single and left his property to his brother Robert J. Gill and his nephew John Ben Milam Gill son of Robert J. Gill. He is buried in the cemetery on Snake Creek in Fort Bend County.
