GILBERT, JOHN FLOYD -- Born in Macon, Georgia, March 21, 1815. Title to a league of land in Zavala's Colony was issued to John Gilbert June 5, 1835. The land was surveyed in Sabine County. In the Headright Certificate to him in 1838 by the Nacogdoches County board of Land Commissioners, for one labor of land it is stated that he came to Texas in 1835. He was a member of Captain Benjamin F. Bryant's Company at San Jacinto. On January 2, 1853, he was issued Donation Certificate No. 661 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. At the same time he received Certificate No. 1885 for 640 acres for having served in the army from March 4 to September 4, 1836.

Mr. Gilbert married Martha Hambey, daughter of John J. and Rhoda Hambey. Mr. Gilbert enlisted Feb. 1, 1862 in Company A, 17th Regiment, Texas Cavalry, Confederate Army. He was captured during the campaign in Little Rock, Arkansas and was taken to Camp Douglas Chicago, Illinois, where he died in prison February 24, 1863. The Confederates who died in prison were buried in the Confederate Mound Oakwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Gilbert was born February 14, 1819 and died December 2, 1900. She is buried in a marked grave in Oak Grove Cemetery, Nacogdoches, Texas.
Children of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert were: Mrs. Isabelle Hawkins; Elizabeth, who married Alexander Grayson Mitchell; Martha M. who married Joseph P. Councill; Sara Jane, died at the age of three; William Jr., died at the age of one; Lusetty Cornelia; Frances Isabella, married Joseph Hawkins and lived in Nacogdoches; Mary Texana; Emma Augusta married Dr. William Q. Fears; and John Walker Gilbert, who married Mona Preasler.
Grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Qilbert were: Mrs. Beulah Elizabeth Clevenger, who lived in Houston; Edward Fears, lived in Lufkin; William P. Councill, lived in Louisiana; Louis G. Councill, lived in Lufkin; Mrs. Joseph H. Henson, lived in Nacogdoches; Jeff Odel, it was unknown where he lived; Mary Raglans, lived in Lufkin; Mrs. Harry Ashe, lived in Houston; Mrs. Henry Atkinson, lived in Lufkin; Mrs. Roy Morris, lived in Brownsville; Floyd Fears, lived in Grigsby; Roy Fears; and Thomas J. Mitchell.
