GARNER, JOHN -- Born in 1809. In the Headright Certificate issued to him in 1838 by the San Augustine County Board for a league and labor of land it is stated that he came to Texas in January 1836. As a matter of fact he enlisted in Captain Sidney Sherman's Company in New Port, Kentucky, December 18, 1835 and arrived with the company in Texas in January, 1836. He was a member of Captain William Wood's Company at San Jacinto and was one of the men who destroyed Vince's Bridge. The others were Erastus (Deaf) Smith, D.W. Rives, Young P. Alsbury, Moses Lapham and E. R. Rainwater.

The records of the General Land Office do not show that Mr. Garner applied for the land due him for his services in the army. He lost his Headright Certificate and a duplicate was issued to him February 22, 1855. He was living in Leon County at that time and sold the certificate to A.B. Hardin for $100.00. On February 21, 1883 while living in Travis County he was issued a Veterans Donation Certificate for 1280 acres of land. He sold the certificate to J. D. Giles.
Mr. Garner was twice married. The name of his first wife has not been ascertained. He moved to Milam County in 1884 and in the following year was married to Mrs. Pamelia Landford, she died near Tanglewood, Lee County, in 1915. Mr. Garner died October 21, 1888. His grave in Waddle Cemetery, is marked. The cemetery is twelve miles north of Lexington, Lee County.
Mr. Garner left no living relatives. Mr. Garner's name is frequently confused with that of John Garner who served in the Texas army against Indians in 1839.
