GALLAHER, EDWARD--Born in Belfast, Ireland in 1813. At the age of fourteen he ran away from home and came to the United States. In applying for land in Austin's Second Colony, Mr. Gallaher stated that he had emigrated to Texas in 1827. On May 21, 1827 he received title to one-fourth of a league of land situated north of Turtle Bayou. On January 25, 1838, he was issued a Headright Certificate for three-fourths of a league and one labor of land by the Brazoria County Board.

Mr. Gallaher was a member of Captain William H. Patton's Company of Columbia Volunteers at San Jacinto and on July 6, 1838, was issued Donation Certificate No. 424 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. On June 19, 1838, he received Bounty Certificate No. 3888 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from March 1 to May 29, 1836.
Mr. Gallaher, a Catholic, was married to Nancy Rector, daughter of Rev. Morgan Rector, a Methodist circuit rider, who came to Texas from Tennessee. Mr. Gallaher died in about 1868 and Mrs. Gallaher in 1872. The two are buried in unmarked graves in the Gallaher cemetery one and one-half miles south of East Bernard, Wharton County. Children of Mr. and Mrs. Gallaher were Stephen, who married Emma S. Bledsoe; Joseph, who died young; James who married Ann Damon of Fort Bend County; Mentor, who married Sally Stuart of Wharton, and Fannie Gallaher.
