FOSTER, JOHN RAY -- Born in Adams County, Mississippi, On November 26, 1832 he received title to one-fourth of a league of land in Austin's Third Colony situated in what is now Jackson County. In Headright Certificate No. ____ issued to him in 1838 for one-twelfth of a league of land by the Board of Land Commissioners for Austin County it is stated that he came to Texas in 1827.

On an army roll on page 106, Volume 1, of the Lamar Papers Mr. Foster is shown as having participated in the Battle of Velasco, June 26, 1832. On May 25, 1838 he was issued Bounty Certificate No. 3573 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from October 8, 1835 to February 4, 1836. He received Bounty Certificate No. 937 for 640 acres of land December 12, 1837 for his services from April 9 to November 20, 1836. He was a member of Captain Moseley Baker's San Felipe Company at San Jacinto, and on November 13, 1839 he was issued Donation Certificate No. 945 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. He was living in Lavaca County October 30, 1848 when he sold the certificate to Philip Howard for $50.00.
Mr. Foster was married to Eliza Jones. Children of Mr. and Mrs. Foster were Sarah Jane, Mattie, Hattie, Richard, Robert, Isaac, and Henry Foster.
