FOSTER, ANTHONY -- In the Court of Claims file in the General Land Office it is shown that he arrived in Texas in the winter of 1835. He was a member of Captain William H. Smith's cavalry Company at San Jacinto, and on February 13, 1860 received Donation Certificate No. 84 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. His Bounty and Headright Certificates, if issued, are not to be found in the files of the General Land Office at Austin.

Mr. Foster died in Panola County, Mississippi, February 8, 1874, while an honorary member of the Texas Veterans Association.
Mr. L. C. Duke, Circuit Clerk of Panola County, Sardis, Mississippi, was asked for further information regarding Mr. Foster. A letter was received by the compiler from Mr. R. Taylor Keys, dated at Sardis, December 15, 1935, from which the following was extracted:
"Your letter of November 16th addressed to the County Clerk requesting certain data on Anthony Foster, a soldier in the Battle of San Jacinto has been referred to me for reply.
General Foster, as he was known locally, was a noted character in this county, well respected for his honor, integrity and courage. He has living in this county at present at least one descendant, Robert Edward Lee Foster, Crenshaw, Mississippi. General Foster lived and died in this county. He is buried here and I shall get the date of his death and burial place as soon as I can see his son, and will give you the data requested.
It might interest you to know that Foster was tried by a Yankee military tribune about 1867 for killing a Dr. A. M. Settle here at Sardis. He was acquitted. While he was incarcerated in jail in this county, he kept a diary and after his acquittal published it. There are a few copied extant in the county. His son has one in which I think there is a picture of General Foster.
