FINCH, MATTHEW -- Born in Tennessee in 1813. In the Headright Certificate issued to him by the Montgomery County Board in 1838 for one-third of a league of land it is stated that he came to Texas in 1835. In Service Record No. 1032 it is certified that he entered the volunteer service February 28 and served to April 1, 1836 when he was appointed Second Lieutenant in Captain Joseph L. Bennett's Company. He was First Lieutenant in Captain James Gillaspie's Company at San Jacinto and on January 20, 1860 his heirs received Donation Certificate No. 83 for 640 acres of land due him for having participated in the battle. On January 26, 1838 he received Bounty Certificate No. 2123 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from February 28 to May 29, 1836.

In the Probate Records of Walker County it is shown that Mr. Finch died in that county in 1846. Colonel Joseph L. Bennett was appointed administrator of his estate November 9, 1846.
