EVETTS, JAMES H. -- arrived in Texas in May, 1835, as is stated in First Class Headright Certificate No. 87 issued to him January 11, 1838 by the Washington County Board of Land Commissioners for a league and a labor of land. The land was surveyed in what are now Bell and Coryell Counties.

Evetts was issued Bounty Certificate No. 764 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from March 1 to May 18, 1836. He was a member of Captain William W. Hill's Company at San Jacinto but he did not apply for the 640 acres of land due him for having participated in the battle.
On an original army roll of Captain Hill's company in the archives of the Texas State Library the following information about Evetts is given. He was born in Smith county, Tennessee in 1806. He was six feet in height and had grey eyes and brown hair. By trade he was a blacksmith. He was enlisted at Asa Mitchell's home in Washington County by Captain Joseph P. Lynch.
Evetts was living in Washington County in 1842 when he enlisted as a lieutenant in the Somervell Expedition. (John Henry Brown, History of Texas, 11, 240).
Mr. Evetts was married twice but the name of his first wife has not been ascertained. His second wife was Mrs. Arsena Millican whom he married in Boonville, Brazos County, May 24, 1844.
In the Probate Records of Brazos County it is stated that Mr. Evetts died in Brazos County in 1856. G. B. Reed was appointed administrator of his estate in May, 1856.
William C. Evetts, son of James H. Evetts by his first marriage, was married to _______ and they had at least two children, James H. Evetts and Julia Evetts.
