DOAN, JOSEPH -- Listed on page 11 of the San Jacinto rolls printed in 1836 as Jas. Douane, a member of Captain William S. Fisher's Company of Velasco Blues. On page 32 of the General Land Office San Jacinto rolls the name appears as Jas. Dawne. The names of the men of Captain Alfred H. Wyly's San Jacinto Company are shown on page 40 of the army rolls in the General Land Office and among them is listed Jas Doan. His name appears as Joseph Donan on page 65 of rolls on the "Return of men raised for 3 months by Major L. Smith, April 5, 1836." Since neither Jas. Douane, Jas. Dawne, or Jas. Doan received neither headright, bounty or Donation Certificates for land, the compiler is convinced that Joseph Doan was transferred from Captain Fisher's Company to the small company of Captain Wyly's.

Mr. Doan probably left Texas shortly after the expiration of his term of enlistment. He did not apply for the land due him for his services in the army. On December 19, 1836, he sold his rights to the one-third of a league of land he was entitled to receive as a headright to James Morgan. In the Headright Certificate issued in his name by the Board of Land Commissioners for Liberty County, October 4, 1838 it is stated that he arrived in Texas prior to March 2, 1836. This means that he came to Texas sometime between May 2, 1835 and March 2, 1836, for had he arrived prior to May 2, 1835 it would have been so stated in the certificate.
