CROSBY, GANEY -- Born in Tennessee in 1813, as is shown on page 115 of the army muster rolls in the General Land Office. In the Headright Certificate issued in his name July 5, 1838, for one-third of a league of land by the Bastrop County Board it is stated that he came to Texas in February. The certificate had been assigned to William Winnans. He was a member of Captain James Gillaspie's Company at San Jacinto but did not apply for the land due him for having participated in the battle.

In Service Record No. 4361 it is stated that Mr. Crosby enlisted in Captain John J. Tumlinson's Company of Rangers February 1836, and served until April 17th. On the following day he joined Captain James Gillaspie's Company and remained in it until May 17, 1836. In Service Record No. 4361 it is certified that he served in Company E, Battalion of Rangers, commanded by Major William H. Smith from April 13 to October 15, 1837. For this service, he was issued Bounty Certificate No. 9919 for 640 acres of land.
Noah Smithwick in his "Evolution of a State" wrote as follows concerning Mr. Crosby: "Ganey Crosby was a nephew of Colonel Ganey of revolutionary times, not an honor 'Choctaw Tom' cared to boast, however, seeing that Colonel Ganey was one of the tiries who gave General Marion so much to do in South Carolina. Ganey Crosby was one of the detachment left at Bastrop to guard the crossing while the families were fleeing for their lives. After we started on, it will probably be remembered, Major Williamson left us, taking with him old Jennie Curtice (Curtis) and Crosby. They fell in with the army and were detailed to guard the baggage; but knowing that a battle was imminent, they left the baggage to its fate and rushed on and participated in the glory of San Jacinto."
