AROCHA, JOSE MARIA -- Born in Texas, as is shown in the Headright Certificate issued to him February 2, 1839, for a league and labor of land by the Bexar County Board. In Service Record No. 4264, it is certified that he served in the army from October 11, 1835, to November 4, 1836. He was a member of Captain Juan N. Seguin's Company at the Storming and Capture of Bexar, December 5 to 10, 1835, and at the battle of San Jacinto. On August 13, 1855, his heirs were issued Donation Certificate No. 718 for 640 acres of land due Mr. Arocha for having participated in the storming of Bexar.

The following information concerning Mr. Arocha is to be found in the Court of Claims files, General Land Office, Austin: He was married to Jesusa Arrean~a who was born in San Antonio and died there in 1853, survived by two daughters, Gertrudes and Rita Arocha. Mr. Arocha and Pedro Herrera were killed by Indians in 1838, when Rita was only six months old. They were members of Captain Manuel Flores' Company and while on an expedition were attacked and killed between Calvillos Rancho and San Antonio.
Gertrudes Arocha, daughter of Jose Maria Arocha, was married to Simon Castillo and Rita, the other daughter, was married to Francisco Chapa. The two sisters were residing in San Antonio with their husbands, January 11, 1861.
