CLEMMONS, LEWIS CHAPMAN -- Born March 25, 1816, near Hopkinsville, Kentucky, one of nine children -- six girls and three boys -- of James and Nancy (Carroll) Clemmons. The Clemmons and Dallas families came to Texas in 1833 and settled in what is now Washington County. Mr. Clemmons was issued a Headright Certificate for one-third of a league of land January 20, 1838 by the Washington County Board, in which it is stated that he arrived in Texas prior to May 2, 1835.

In Service Record No. 9949 it is stated that he enlisted in Captain Philip Coe's Company of Rangers July 9, 1835. On an original roll of Captain William W. Hill's Company he is shown as having enlisted at Asa Mitchell's in Captain Hill's Company March 2, 1836, having been recruited by Captain Joseph P. Lynch. He was discharged, according to Service Record No. 7949, May 30, 1836. He was described on Captain Hill's roll as being five feet, five inches in height; of fair complexion, with dark eyes and light hair. He was issued Donation Certificate No. 559 for 640 acres of land September 26, 1838, for having participated in the battle of San Jacinto.
Mr. Clemmons was married in 1863 to Sarah George Newman. Mr. Clemmons died February 26, 1893, in Washington County, within one mile of where his father had settled in 1833. Mrs. Clemmons died February 27, 1894.
Children of Mr. and Mrs. Clemmons were Robert Lee, Nannie Louise, William Tell, Jennie, and Ruth Clemmons.
Austin Clemmons, brother of Lewis C. Clemmons died in Austin County.
