CARTWRIGHT, WILLIAM P. -- Born March 16, 1813, in Washington County, Alabama, a son of Peter Cartwright, who came to Texas with his family. In Headright Certificate No. 156 issued to William P. Cartwright, February 15, 1835 for one-third of a league of land by the Board of Land Commissioners for Montgomery County it is stated that he arrived in Texas, December 22, 1832.

In Comptroller's Military Service Record No. 1106 it is certified that Mr. Cartwright served in the army from April 13, to July 13, 1836. He was a member of Captain William Ware's Company at San Jacinto but did not apply for any land for having served in the army. The following is a copy of his Comptroller's Military Service Record:
"I do hereby Certify that William Cartwright Entered the Service of Texas as a Volunteer on the 12th day of April and has continued in said service until the present time, Sd. Cartwright fought bravely in the Action of the 21st Apl on the San Jacinto River and has performed promptly the duties of a soldier - he is therefore honorably discharged--

In Camp near Victoria July 13, 1836"
Mr. Cartwright died October 25, 1844 and is buried in the
Cartwright family cemetery one mile from Keenan, Montgomery County. The
State of Texas erected a monument at his grave in 1936.
