SIMPSON, JEREMIAH W. - Name not shown on the San Jacinto rolls printed in 1836 but it appears on page 36 of the San Jacinto rolls in the General Land Office as a member of Captain William W. Hill’s Company. This was an error, however, for on January 6, 1840 he accepted Donation Certificate No. 992 for 640 acres of land for having been detailed to guard the baggage at the camp opposite Harrisburg, April 21, 1836. The land was surveyed in McLennan County.

In Comptroller’s Military Service Record No. 1955 it is certified that Mr. Simpson served in Captain William W. Hill Company from March 1 to May 30, 1836. He did not apply for the donation land due him for that service. On September 14, 1838 he was issued Bounty Certificate No. 4291 for 320 acres of land for his services from July 3 to October 3, 1836.

On the original roll of Captain Hill’s company Mr. Simpson is shown as having been born in Rowan County, North Carolina in 1805. He is shown as having been recruited at the home of Asa Mitchell in what is now Washington County, Texas by Joseph P. Lynch, March 1, 1836. He was described as being five feet, ten inches in height; of dark complexion with black hair and black eyes.

Mr. Simpson was living in Milam County, February 24, 1846 when he appointed R. F. Hennekin his agent to dispose of Donation Certificate No. 992.

Mr. Simpson came to Texas in 1834, as is stated in Headright Certificate No. 140 issued to him in 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Board of Land Commissioners for Washington County.
