Chance’s company who were detailed to guard the baggage at the camp opposite Harrisburg, April 21, 1836. In the headright certificate issued to him January 10, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Washington County Board it is stated that Mr. Merritt arrived in Texas, September 1, 1835. In a Comptroller’s Military Service Record there is an affidavit signed by Allen Caruthers, Thomas P. Shaparo and Samuel Kenny at Goliad, June 1, 1836 in which they state that Mr. Merritt joined the volunteers commanded by Captain W. Bromley on February 27, 1836 and left the town of Washington under his command. General Thomas J. Rusk on June 3, 1836 certified that Mr. Merritt having served three months in the army was that day discharged. He evidently re-enlisted promptly for on January 24, 1838 he was issued Bounty Certificate No. 2064 for 640 acres of land for serving in the army from February 27 to September 5, 1836. He was living in Washington County, February 26, 1856 when he sold the certificate for $200.00 to Dr. John G. Chalmers.
Mr. Merritt was married to Jane Wood in Washington County, October 1, 1838. He died in Washington county prior to June 11, 1871, at which time Mrs. Ann Meador, wife of R. M. Meador and daughter of Mr. Merritt, sold Donation Certificate No. 636. She was the only surviving heir of Mr. Merritt and her home was in Washington County.
