Veteran Bio

In 1839 Mr. Jones was married to Laura Ann Carter, daughter of Charles Carter, in Grimes County. After the Civil War he moved with his family to Bell County. Mrs. Jones, born in Alabama in 1822, died July 31, 1894. Mr. Jones died April 25, 1890, while a member of the Texas Veterans Association. Both are buried in marked graves in the Howard Cemetery five miles northeast of Temple, Bell County.

Children of Mr. and Mrs. Jones, all of whom are deceased except Allen C. Jones, were - John, Benjamin, James, Mary, Laura, Rebecca, Charles, William and Allen C. Jones. Mrs. Allen C. Jones resides at 101 South Sixth Street, Temple, Texas.

OATH OF IDENTITY.

Keeton M. Jones of the town of Belton county of Bell in the State of Texas on this 3rd day of December One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy personally appeared before me, the undersigned, a Justice of the Peace for the county and State above mentioned, the said Keeton M. Jones, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Keeton M. Jones who was a member in Captain Hayden Arnolds Company of Col Sidney Serhmans Regiment of Infantry Volunteers that he enlisted on the 1st day of March A D 1836 for the term of three months and was discharged at Victoria Texas on or near the 1st day of June A D 1836 by reason of the Expiration of his term of service -- He drew 640 acres of land because he was one of the number detailed by special order of the Commanding General to guard the baggage of the Army near Harrisburg, for which he received a patent on the 21st September, A D 1846 Vol. 1 -- No. 36 -- signed by A. C. Horton Governor of the State of Texas and Thomas Wm Ward commissioner of the Gen Land Office all of which will appear from the Records of the land office. said 649 acres of land of land lies in Montgomery County Texas on Beadeys bayou.

County of Bell )( a Notary Public in and for said county personally appeared Keeton M. Jones to me well known who being duly sworn on oath says he is a resident citizen of Bell County Texas -- that he is the identical Keeton M. Jones who enlisted in Capt. Smith company in March 1836 in Col Sherman’s regiment—in the service of the Republic of Texas. Capt. Arnold afterwards commanded said company—that he participated in the battle of San Jacinto in April 1836, and he believes that he is entitled to a pension under an act of the legislature—granting pensions to the survivors of the veterans of the revolution which separated Texas from Mexico—that he has received bounty and Donation warrants for land for his services as a soldier in the Texas Army.
