GRAVIS, JOHN A. F. - Came to Texas in November, 1835, as is stated in Headright Certificate No. 43 and 44 issued to him February 5, 1838 for one league and one labor of land by the Board of Land Commissioners for Robertson County. He was First Lieutenant in the company of rangers recruited by Captain Sterling C. Robertson January 16, 1836 and when this organization was disbanded he joined Captain Joseph B. Chance’s Washington Company. He was issued Bounty Certificate No. 3027 for 320 acres of land April 25, 1838 for having served in the army from June 16 to September 17, 1836. The Land Office records do not show that he applied for the bounty land due him for his services in the army prior to April 21, 1836.

Mr. Gravis was issued Donation Certificate No. 825 for 640 acres of land March 11, 1839 for having been detailed to guard the baggage at the camp opposite Harrisburg, April 21, 1836. The land was surveyed in what is now Jim Wells County.
The Marriage Records of Washington County show that Mr. Gravis was married to Irene E. Hall, October 6, 1837.
The Deed Records of Travis County Show that on November 2, 1841 Mr. Gravis signed a contract to build a chimney to, and plaster the walls of, the home of M. H. Beaty at the corner of Pecon (Sixth) Street and Congress Avenue, Austin.
The Deed Records of Nueces County show that Mr. Gravis died in 1856 and that his property was sold at Auction, December 24, 1856.
