Come See the Story of Texas Independence
AS YOU ENTER the San Jacinto Monument and walk into the grand open gallery that showcases the core of the Museum’s collections in our Permanent Exhibit hall, it’s like walking through hundreds of years of this region’s history. Period artifacts, documents, prints, and photographs come together to share with our guests the story of Texas.
You will see the firearms used in the key battles that shaped the history of the Southwest and view items used by the pioneers of Texas independence. You will also see Spanish silver, pre-Columbian pottery, the maps that guided the explorers of the region, religious artwork and artifacts, the tools used to work the land and herd the cattle and many other artifacts that highlight key moments in history over the past 500 years.
Although the cases in the Permanent Exhibit hall remain in place, the contents are frequently updated. New exhibits on the symbolism of Liberty, newly acquired and rarely seen artifacts, and a different perspective on some old favorites will all be coming to the hall in the next few months. We look forward to sharing these new windows into Texas history and we encourage our younger visitors to use our curriculum guide, which is full of activities that can be done at the museum, at home, or in the classroom, to give students the tools to better understand the rich and diverse history of the state.
